Name:Matthew Harding
Birthdate:Feb 20
Location:United States
Name: LCDR Matthew "Maitias" Harding, retired
Gender: Male
Age: 35...ish [1987 - 2022 native reality]
Species: Advanced Human (Metahuman, mutant, 'evolved human')
Appearance: At just around five feet ten inches, Matt won't be lording over anyone any time soon. He makes up for it with a stocky build however, weighing in at an impressive one hundred and ninety pounds. He rarely sports facial hair, but when he does, its near-auburn color is decidedly different from his dark brown hair.

His body has its fair share of scars, no more or less than any other soldier involved in a world war.

He dresses semi-formally much of the time, and often wearing a leather jacket and what appears to be a very large wristwatch.

Personality: As an independently employed researcher and studier of the unknown, Matt is generally idealistic and optimistic. He prefers to believe the best of what he studies, and puts forth every effort into improving the world around him and making things better. He can come off as naive a lot of the time, and in some ways he likely is. By his own perspective, however, he's simply dedicated and focused. He prefers to quietly work behind the scenes to ensure his work isn't abused, rather than either trust that it simply won't be, or point out how it could be abused.

On a less emotional side, Matt is quite analytical and methodical a lot of the time. While just as capable of acting on the fly as other former soldiers, and fully capable of doing something without thinking (something he's done far too often, as far as he cares to tell), he prefers using plans with everything accounted for. Timelines, breakdowns of possible areas where things can go wrong, and analysis of everything around him is definitely the preferred M.O.

Despite his taste for future technologies and research, he has anachronistic quirks that seem to defy this love of the new. Matt prefers bound books to e-readers or the like, and almost all his notes are written on paper long before they're archived on a computer. He also smokes, though he's careful to do it only often enough that his enhanced healing system can recover from it.

His idealism comes from an effort to step away from the past of the Psychic Wars. As a soldier and a fighter, he drops the pretense of naivete and cockiness. His analytical mind is pushed to its limit, having to plan off the cuff and account for new things as they come.

In addition, his travels thanks to the D3 have only served to enforce his need to look at things from a soldier's perspective. When the next dimension one ends up in could be some hellishly unfriendly realm plagued by energy-stealing lifeforms or a cosmic bathhouse of radiation, one has to be capable of adapting to almost anything. Almost as a way of adapting to this constant battle for survival, Matthew has gained a penchant for smart remarks and glib quips.

Powers and Abilities: On Matt's Earth, humanity had begun evolving and adapting to a new, heretofore unrecognized cosmic event from as early as the 1700s. This sudden burst of change in the human genome caused a large number of deformities and lethal cancers in the following generations, but an interesting (if rare) change did arise: psionics. While at first unrecognized, and quite weak on top of that, over the next two hundred and fifty years those with the psionic capacity continued to unconsciously utilize their talents and face further mutations, adapting and strengthening until the first government tests for psionic powers began arising in 1964.

Psionic power is separated into three Talents, and there are sub-disciplines further separating them. The three major Talents are Coercion (Telepathic and Empathic powers), Kinesis (Telekinesis, Pyrokinesis, etc.), and Resistance. While all have their uses, Matt's is considered one of the most dangerous: Resistance. Resistants were the last Psychics to be discovered (only at the height of the Third World War, also known as the Psychic Wars), and are now almost synonymous with its end. A Resistant has a varied degree of resistance or immunity to the other psychic energies.

Matt is a powerful Resistant, almost completely immune to all but the more powerful of psionic abilities. Most telepathy seems to roll off him as if he didn't exist (indeed, like many Resistants, it's hard for a telepath to even know he's there -- he seems to simply be non-existent as far as mental probing goes (insert joke here)), and telekinetics find themselves incapable of touching him directly with their unique abilities. Means around this exist, obviously: Telepaths could control non-psychic people next to him, and telekinetics can hurl other things at him. Compounding his own abilities, when Resistants are in close proximity of each other, their effect amplifies, to the point where a Psychic surrounded by Resistants may find him or herself completely unable to use any psionic abilities at all.

Beyond this, he has minor genetic enhancements and a weak biological implant. This has served to augment his red blood cells, granter faster healing of wounds, illnesses, and injuries. It's not a miracle fix, but many injuries once considered fatal are now only critical. Severe injuries still take a while to heal, and broken bones still need to be set in order to heal properly. Still, an open wound that might take four days to heal for a normal individual will take only about fifteen to eighteen hours for him. The white blood cells have likewise been augmented, serving to strengthen his autoimmune system, increasing resistance to infection. Both of these were standard military enhancements for all Allied Soldiers during World War Three.

Regarding technology, Matt has acquired his fair share from both private development and research, and by virtue of living with the luxuries of his era. Some are mere innovations of already existing tech, while others are unique and proprietary devices that only members of his private company yet possess.

Among those devices he owns is a personal force-field, usually accompanied by a powered armor of some sort. The strength of the shield varies with the armor, but outside of the armor it's usually good at least for stopping an explosion from a hand grenade or two before it shuts down and has to recharge. Its effectiveness against bullets varies depending on caliber and velocity, but it can typically take no more than four seconds of sustained fire in combat.

His leather jacket also has Tesseract Threading built into its pockets: they're bigger on the inside. He can, and does, pack quite a bit of equipment in said pockets, but only what can fit through the aperture (anything that can be finagled to fit through the pocket's opening). This is pretty standard-- but expensive --technology in his home reality, however.

His unique technology is quite prominent: he's the only one from his home dimension with them. They are the Digital Dimension Divider (D3), and the Personal Adaptive Energy Devices (PAEDs).

The PAEDs appear to be two slightly bulky plasma pistols. What they possess, however, is the ability to combine and shift into different shapes for a multitude of purposes. Originally intended for work in deep space as both a multi-function weapon and as a necessary tool for repairs and construction, the prototype models were loaded into the test suit Matthew took when whisking away with the D3.

The Digital Dimension Divider is another unique tool, co-invented by Matthew along with his friends from the Allied Military. Originally intended simply as a means of instantaneous transport across the galaxy, what it ended up doing was something far more. The D3 is a device with the power to transport the wearer across time, space, and reality. It's the catalyst to Matt's current dimension-hopping.

During his travels between realities, he has amassed much knowledge regarding different technologies, their applications, and concepts, though the significance of this varies with where he is and what he can actually use (magic only exists in some realities, for example, and no matter the knowledge acquired, he is still incapable of using it).

In dimensions where he can get away with it, Matt hides his technology and abilities among superheroes and metahumans native to the reality. In this guise, the lion's share of his devices are stored either in a very bulky motorcycle (referred to as his "R-Wheel"), or an only-slight-less-bulky utility belt. When suited up, he responds to the moniker Kamen Rider Shift.

Matt is an original character played by [info]hyper_metal. Player and character both over 18.
